1st Pan-Hellenic Conference for Free and Open Source Software in Education with international participation

Chania, Crete, 16 to 18 April 2010

The Conference aims at promoting the deployment of FOSS in education and the Greek scientific community, towards its critical and creative employment in all education levels.


The main thematic axes are:

  • Theoretical framework for the utilization of FOSS in education
  • The FOSS international education community
  • Design and implementation of educational applications using FOSS
  • Models and practices for incorporating FOSS in the educational process
  • Teaching Informatics in Primary Education using FOSS
  • Teaching Informatics in Secondary Education using FOSS
  • Teaching Informatics in Higher Education using FOSS
  • FOSS supported school unit administration (Timetable creation, school portal design and deployment, Database applications for teacher, student and book archiving, library management, etc.)
  • FOSS supported school activities (school clubs, Vocational orientation courses, etc.)
  • FOSS Informatics school laboratory
  • FOSS and Technical Support
  • Training and support of Educators for the utilization of FOSS
  • FOSS and Education Policy

Presentation categories:

  • Refereed papers: Up to ten (10) pages
  • Posters: Up to 4 pages

FOSS Workshops

During the Conference workshops relevant to the utilization of FOSS in education are to be held. All interested parties (FOSS user groups and societies, laboratories, educators and trainers, etc.) are hereby invited to submit their proposals on the organization of such workshops to the Organization Committee ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Specific workshop topics include but are not limited to:

  • Open distance learning platforms 9Moodle, eClass) and their application in education.
  • FOSS utilization guides in education.
  • Use of EngLab in education.
  • The concept of Open CourseWare and its use in education as supplementary/alternative material.
  • Open CourseWare sources on the Internet.
  • OLPC and Digital Classroom computer.
  • Creative Commons Licences, GNU /GPL, FreeBSD, etc.
  • Security applications

Conference Venue

  • Cultural Centre of the Municipality of Chania
  • Informatics laboratories in school units of the Municipality of Chania
